If you are considering a type of insulation for your home, then you may think you have approximately two choices, batt or fiberglass insulation, or spray foam insulation.  You may be well aware of the advantage and disadvantages to both, but it’s important not to forget the energy-saving properties of blown insulation.  If you choose spray foam insulation you will already be saving money on your energy bills and you could also be benefiting from the sound dampening benefits especially if the blown insulation has an open cell application, although it wouldn’t perform as well as fiberglass or mineral fiber.

So it seems simple right?  Not likely, spray foam insulation may be favored in many cases especially by the contractor offering it, but you may also be concerned about the health risks that come with spray foam insulation.  You may already know that most polyurethane based spray insulation contain formaldehyde and other dangerous chemicals in their application.

One type of blown insulation that could be a good alternative is a soy-based insulation, which also is an insulation with a high R-value and it doesn’t contain the dangerous chemicals in the product.  While a soy-based blown insulation may be beneficial, it could also be more expensive, but the positive may outweigh the negative.  Just some quick points to think about when thinking about different types of insulations.
