You probably have been taught that Carbon Monoxide gas (CO) is dangerous, but do you know why?

This gas will kill you in as little as 5 minutes, and some time before that you will be so dizzy and nauseous that you might be unable to make it out to safety.

While it isn’t the most deadly gas out there, it is definitely one that you are the most likely to get exposed to. CO gas is generated whenever fuel is burned without sufficient supply of oxygen, and most homes have some type of appliance that generates this gas.

One danger with some homes is that of backdraft. While they might have everything set up to funnel CO gas out a chimney, the pressure in the home could lead to the gas being sucked back into the house without the homeowner being aware of it. Often you can notice black residue around the area where the gas gets sucked back in.

The best way to check the way the air flows is to use a smoke pencil that will generate a trail which shows if you have an issue with backdraft.
