Do you take good care of your water heater? If you just thought “What do you mean, I have to care for it?” you are not alone. Most homeowners don’t give much attention to their water heater as long as it is working, but with a little care, your water heater could last a lot longer and have less issues. The water heater is constantly working, heating up water for you to use, but that also means that there is a constant stream of water going into it. While your water is fairly clean, there will be some particles in it, and the bottom of your water heater is a good place for them to collect. Over time, this sediment will impede the functionality of your water heater.
If you look at the bottom of your water heater, you should find a drain valve that you can use to empty out the sediment.
An essential part to the proper functioning of your water heater is the pressure relief valve. If this doesn’t work right, you could have a potentially dangerous situation at hand. To check that it works, lift it slightly and you should hear a gurgling sound. The valve should snap into place when you release it. If this doesn’t happen, you might need to replace the valve.
